Green Building is the practice of increasing the efficiency with which
buildings and their sites use and harvest energy, water, and materials
which will reduce the building impacts on human health and the
environment which is connected to the complete building life cycle.
Green Building is the practice of designing, planning, and
constructing buildings where the priority and emphasis is placed on
the current and future environmental impact of the building.
Green Building is also sometimes known as "sustainable building",
"environmental building", "green home building" or just simply "green"
which also leads to additional confusion. The U.S. Green Building
Council's definition of Green is "a high performing home that's energy
and water efficient, has good indoor air quality, uses environmentally
sustainable materials.
Energy Star is a government-backed labeling program that helps people
and organizations save money and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by
identifying factories, home appliances and electronics that have
superior energy efficiency. In recent years, Energy Star ratings have
been extended to some new homes, commercial and industrial facilities.
Energy Star originated in 1992 as a joint program of the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPAM) and the U.S. Department of
Energy (DoE). In 2007, the European Union adapted Energy Star,
including related standards, for all of its members. Australia and New
Zealand has already adopted the program. As a result, the Energy Star
symbol has become the international symbol for energy efficiency.
